Though the bounces—and the final result—may not have gone Harrison’s way on Monday, Huskies’ coach Alejandro Galeano still remains confident that his program is heading in the right direction. On Sept. 12, taking on a solid Mahopac squad, a few untimely miscues and squandered chances served to sink the Huskies in a 2-1 loss but did little to dampen the enthusiasm that Galeano has for his ballclub.
After a scoreless first half, Mahopac first grabbed the lead with 25 minutes to play on a goal by Ian Lanter. Six minutes later, however, the Huskies knotted the score on a creative play by Braiden Sottile.
Unfortunately for the Huskies, the game wouldn’t be tied for long, as Manny Perez buried the game winner with 17 minutes remaining.
According to Galeano, the final score was the end result of the Huskies failing to capitalize on their chances in the offensive end, something he said will always come back to haunt teams when they play opponents like Mahopac (2-1).
“I thought we had a great game overall, but we missed on a lot of our chances,” said Galeano. “It’s a tough loss, we’re going to get better, but we just have to put away the opportunities that we have.”
That said, Galeano acknowledge his club is well ahead of where it was at this time last year. In 2021, the Huskies won just one game all year, its regular-season finale against Pelham. Through four games this year, Harrison finds itself at 2-2, and just enjoyed a weekend sweep of Walter Panas and Nanuet.
“I think this year’s team is more together than we were last year,” said Galeano. “Everyone is united and working together, but we have to keep on working hard to get better, working to keep the team and the bond together and hopefully finishing out this season strong.”
The main areas of improvement, added the head coach, would be finishing and limiting mistakes on the defensive end. They will need to clean those issues up quickly, noted Galeano as the Huskies prepare for another tough 11-day stretch that will see them take on foes such as Sleepy Hollow, Gorton, Brewster and Class AA powerhouse Scarsdale.
“It’s a tough schedule, we don’t have any breaks,” said Galeano. “16 games in a month in a half, it’s tough on the boys and it definitely take a toll.”
