The Rye boys soccer team came into last Wednesday’s showdown against rival Harrison eager to settle a score. Still smarting from a loss to the Huskies in the summer league, the Garnets set out to avenge that defeat—and continue its unbeaten start to the season.
In the end, the visitors were able to do just that on both counts, topping Harrison 4-1 behind an early offensive explosion and picking up their third win of the season with some solid play down the stretch.
The Garnets wasted little time grabbing control, scoring in the second and third minute of regulation to set the tone before the Huskies were able to answer for their only tally of the game 10 minutes in. Charlie Margiloff—who finished with a goal and an assist for Rye—explained that his squad’s quick start could be chalked up to the long history between the two clubs.
“I think those early goals really brought everyone up,” said Margiloff. “It was automatic, and you could tell that everybody was up for this game.”
In addition to Margiloff’s inspired play, the Garnets also got goals from Kasen Scarperi, Shun Nagata and Kaden Zion. Netminder Max Grothall made a number of key stops to keep a game Huskies squad off the score sheet after the 10th minute.
“We knew we needed to win this game, they beat us in summer league and we knew they were going to come out fierce,” said Margiloff. “So the one goal was to come out with a win and play aggressive the entire game.”
The win put Rye at 3-0 on the year, something Margiloff said is a testament to the ability of a new core of players coming together quickly. Rye lost a number of mainstays to graduation last spring, but so far, the team doesn’t seem to have lost a step.
“I think we lost a lot people from last year’s team, but we’re coming in hotter,” said Margiloff. “I think we have a lot of guys on this team who can really play and we’re ready for everybody.”
Harrison will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 21, when they take on Class AAA Mamaroneck. Rye will travel to Tappan Zee on Sept. 19 before hitting the road to take on Ardsley on Thursday. They will take on a surging Eastchester team on Saturday at 5 p.m.
