Last week was a banner one for the Harrison Huskies girls basketball program and standout Mia Strazza.
On Wednesday, February 5, Strazza became the program’s all-time scoring leader, eclipsing the 2018 mark set by Avery LaBarbera. Two nights later, she led her team to a decisive win over league foe Eastchester, helping the Huskies gain some much-needed momentum before the postseason kicks off next week.
Strazza said that breaking the record—which came against Ardsley—was a dream come true, especially since she was able to share the moment with LaBarbera, who was in attendance for the game.

“It was always a goal for me, even if I didn’t start thinking about it until recently,” she said. “But Avery was a major role model for me, I came up watching her and pushed myself to achieve and accomplish the same things that she did and follow in her footsteps.
“She set the bar really high, and I just worked hard to get that that level,” she added. “[Avery] is still the best ever and she’s still my role model.”
With that milestone behind her, however, Strazza is showing no signs of slowing down.
On Friday night, she guided her squad to a senior night win over Eastchester, giving her a chance to think back on her stellar scholastic career.
Strazza said she has been thrilled to assume the senior leadership role this year, and said that there is much promise in the future of the Huskies’ program.
“I hope to leave Harrison better than I found it, which is definitely hard because when I came up to varsity, we had some really amazing teams,” laughed Strazza. “But this is a great team with good young players, and I might be having the most fun I’ve had in six years just watching them learn and grow together.”
The Huskies are currently 8-11 and will close out the regular season with a Thursday tilt against another league foe in Rye. The Garnets (17-2) will likely be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Class AA playoffs. Harrison is currently slotted into the No. 12 slot, but much can change before the playoff seeds are announced next week.
